Mary Copenhaver is an accomplished and award winning quilter, with a well developed sense of color and a demanding eye for detail. Her quilts grace the homes of numerous friends, family members and patrons.

Mary was introduced to sun printing (also known as sun painting or heliographic art) by her sister Kay in 2002, and immediately found it to be an exciting, challenging, and rewarding art form.

Mary founded SUNsational Prints in 2005, and creates her one-of-a-kind fabric sun prints in Portland, Oregon and Keauhou Hawaii. She uses natural Hawaiian tropical or Pacific Northwest flora and fauna plus the warmth of the sun to create many of her fabric sun prints. Each is a unique work of art.

Mary has a liberal arts education from Grinnell College and the University of Wisconsin. Her earlier careers include stints in social services, working with developmentally disabled children, and in retail management.

Mary’s community service activities include being a reading buddy for elementary school students and as a member of a neighborhood emergency response team. Her hobbies include travel, gardening, snorkeling, and yoga. Mary and her husband Bill live in Portland, Oregon and also spend extended time at their second home in Keauhou on Hawaii's Big Island.

What are Sun Prints?
Sun Printing (also known as sun painting or heliographic art) is a process where photo-sensitive fabric paints are applied to moistened fabric. Leaves, flowers, feathers, shells, stencils, or other objects are placed onto the wet, painted fabric. The fabric is then placed in the sun where the rays and heat set the color on the portion of the fabric that is exposed. The shadows of the objects are imprinted on the fabric.

Mary uses only 100% cotton fabric; usually 230 count sateen for her creations.
