Always attracted to color, texture, and pattern, Amanda Murphy has been designing, sewing, and doing needlework since she was a child. Her projects have included quilts, clothing, bags, household accessories, samplers and more. After graduating with a BFA in design from Carnegie Mellon University, she worked for a graphic design firm in Alexandria, Virginia. She later moved to New York, where she was an art director for a multimedia firm. All the while she continued to sketch and sew.
After moving to North Carolina with her family, Amanda discovered quilting, an art that marries her passion for design with her enthusiasm for handwork. She gradually expanded her knowledge of quilting techniques, producing many quilts in the process, several of which were awarded ribbons at major quilting shows. She combined these techniques with the ideas she had been sketching over the years, and Amanda Murphy Design was born.
While Amanda's designs have a modern look, they are deeply influenced by the elements of the past. She believes that inspiration can be found everywhere we turn - from the shapes and patterns encountered in the natural world, to those found in music, architecture or the decorative arts. She hopes that her designs will inspire others to create their own works of art.
